Kumlien's Gull (Larus [glaucoides] kumlieni), 5cy+, 08.01.2012, Blåvandshuk, Blåvand

Case: 2013-85
Date: 2012-01-08
Site: Blåvandhuk, Denmark
Observer: *Henrik Brandt, Per Poulsen

This is a Kumlien's Gull as the dark pigmentation on the outer webs of what looks like P9-P8 on the flight shot puts it outside the range for glaucoides. This dark colouring is easily visible in the shot of the bird sitting on the water and thus confirms that the pattern is present on both wings and confirms the ID as a Kumlien's Gull.

The bird may be a fourth winter rather than adult due to the slightly faded colour of the primaries, but the other sign to look for on possible 4th winters is small black markings on the bill. However, the photos don't allow for a critical assessment and the age is thus put down as 5cy+.
