Herring Gull (Larus argentatus) with thayeri wing pattern

This Herring Gull with a so-called thayeri type wing tip pattern was seen on June 9, 2012 in an argentatus breeding colony on Anholt in Denmark. The thayeri pattern refers to the long pale tongues running down the inner edges of the primaries and especially P9.

It is a wingtip pattern found in northern argentatus Herring Gulls though this bird appeared to be very much like the other local argentatus in all other aspects and was seen alarming together with the normal patterned argentatus in the breeding colony.

In argentatus with large white mirrors and long pale tongues, the white mirror of P9 normally covers the outer web too as in this individual.
